Diamonds on the Ocean Floor: Marine Mining

Did you know, diamonds are mined from the sea floor? This vessel (there are only 5 in the world) is mining off the cost of Namibia in SW Africa. Recovering diamonds from the ocean floor is like scattering 1lb of sugar over a football field, then trying to recover the sugar at night, using a Dustbuster. At a depth of 650 feet, a seabed crawler lifts diamond bearing gravel to the vessel through flexible hoses. These diamonds originated in South Africa and were washed down the Orange River and deposited along the coastlines of Namibia and South Africa, between 20-50 million years ago.
